Happy Labor Day

Labor Day we celebrate the hard work, dedication, and achievements of workers across the nation. The holiday weekend is filled with picnics, family, and fun! Following are some tips on how to keep everyone in your family safe.

Grilling on Labor Day is second only to the Fourth of July; hotdogs and burgers are favorites. However, hotdogs are the top cause of food-related choking in children under the age of three, and one child in the United States dies from choking every five days. In addition, choking is the leading cause of accidental deaths in persons over the age of 65. When it comes to choking, prevention is always better than cure.

Here are some additional safety tips to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend:

Grilling Safety

  • Supervise the Grill: Always keep an eye on the grill when it’s in use. Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
  • Proper Tools: Use long-handled tools to avoid burns and splatters.
  • Check for Leaks: If using a gas grill, check for gas leaks before use.

Food Safety

  • Cook Thoroughly: Ensure meats are cooked to the right temperature to avoid foodborne illnesses.
  • Keep it Cool: Keep perishable foods in a cooler with ice packs to prevent spoilage.
  • Avoid Cross-Contamination: Use separate plates and utensils for raw and cooked foods.

Choking Prevention

  • Cut Food Appropriately: Cut hotdogs and other foods into small, manageable pieces for young children and elderly individuals.
  • Stay Seated: Encourage everyone to sit down while eating to reduce the risk of choking.
  • Learn First Aid: Familiarize yourself with basic first aid and CPR techniques.
  • Have a LifeVac at Home and Car: LifeVac can be used on someone disabled, pregnant or large in stature. Please be sure it is only the original LifeVac that has the US Patent, FDA and MHRA Registered.
  • Protect your family: To date, LifeVac has saved 2,747 (over 300 more since July 4th) total lives with over 1,600 being children.

General Safety

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water, especially if spending time outdoors.
  • Sun Protection: Use sunscreen, wear hats, and seek shade to protect against sunburn.
  • Fireworks Caution: If using fireworks, follow local laws and safety guidelines to prevent injuries.
